We spill our tales of woe to friends and find comfort in a cup.
What would life be without tea?
Teacup DLB 2023
Tea
by Deborah L. Brewer
The tea is bitter,
bracing;
it cuts the sticky,
wistful sweetness
of a store-bought maple
scone.
A tender scone,
like a rueful friend,
mixed and kneaded,
long past blending,
‘till her butter ran hot
and her resilience
drained away.
Baked soft and mealy,
the crumbs
cling to my teeth
like shame.
I can accept or judge,
affirm or chide,
grieve, or merely
endure.
My tongue
advances warily;
tannins stain
as well as clean.
“More tea?”
